Credit card rules to live by
Always pay in full
Credit card APR in Kenya ranges from 17-49%. If you don't pay in full every month, interest compounds fast. A KSh 10,000 balance at 36% APR becomes KSh 14,400 in one year.
Use the interest-free period
Most cards offer 45-55 days interest-free. If you pay your full balance by the due date, you pay ZERO interest. This is the only way to use a credit card responsibly.
Watch the hidden fees
Annual fees, cash advance fees (5-8%), late payment fees (KSh 2,000+), and foreign transaction fees (3-4%). Ask for the full fee schedule before signing up.
Stick to your bank
You're more likely to get approved by a bank where you already have an account and relationship. Apply at your primary bank first — they know your income pattern.
Compare credit cards side by side
Search for specific banks and compare credit card offerings.
Frequently asked questions
What's the minimum income for a credit card?
Most banks require a minimum gross income of KSh 50,000-100,000/month for a Classic card and KSh 200,000+/month for Gold/Platinum. Some digital banks are more flexible.
Should I get a credit card?
Only if you pay in full every month. Credit cards are free money for 45 days — if you pay on time. They're financial quicksand if you don't. If you carry a balance, you're paying 17-49% APR.
Gold vs Platinum — what's the difference?
Gold cards have lower annual fees (KSh 3,000-6,000) and lower credit limits. Platinum cards have higher fees (KSh 10,000-20,000) but better rewards, travel insurance, and higher limits. Go Gold unless you spend KSh 100K+/month.
